Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha is located 22 kilometers down Moi South Lake Road, Naivasha and is an integral part of Elsamere and was established in 1989. It continues the conservation work started by the Adamson's and offers a wide range of educational programmes for teachers, pupils and community leaders.

 

Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha is also frequently host to important conferences and research seminars concerned with local, national and international conservation issues. Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha provides dormitory accommodation for up to 56 students with an additional 4 cottages for staff as well as a large well equipped conference room and laboratory.

 

Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha team can provide an interesting range of organized environmental activities on site including bird watching, nature walks and tree planting as well as visits to local areas of conservation interest such as Hells Gate and Nakuru National Park.

 

If preferred, teachers or group leaders may arrange their own programmes using the available Kitchen Garden facilities. Day visits are also catered for and backed up by outreach visits to local schools.

Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha has accommodation for 62 people (4 double rooms for team leaders and 3 blocks/dormitories with a bed capacity of 54) in full or half board basis.

 

Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha sources local fresh food for the dining room & kitchen offering 3 course main meals with tea breaks at 10am and 4pm for both visiting and resident guests.

 

Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha has two conference halls with a capacity of 25 and 50 people respectively and are fully equipped with TV/video, overhead projector/ screen, writing materials, flip charts/ marker pens, LCD projector and extensive grounds for workshop and/or conference events.

 

The scientific laboratory has basic equipment; researchers are encouraged to bring their own specific instruments/chemicals. Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha premises also include offices and store rooms.

Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha Departments

The Centre has 3 operational departments namely; Education, Environment and Administration & Operations.

 

Onsite and in-house teacher training on environmental and curriculum integration
Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha has tailor made interesting environmental courses with innovative techniques designed for teachers focusing on conservation and helping them integrate this into the school curriculum, both within and outside the classroom.

 

Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha normally conducts 4 teacher training workshops; 2 at the Centre and 2 within the target regions in East Africa countries i.e. Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Trained teachers are later monitored in their schools to gauge their environmental contribution to school and community at large.


Field based ecological studies for schools (day and overnight visits)

Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha cover public and private schools both local and international offering them a unique opportunity to learn about conservation throughout the year. The visits can be on a day basis or involve an overnight stay.

 

While on such visits schools take part in;

a.) Boat rides
b.) Documentary shows
c.) Conservation demonstrations and scientific practical's e) Visit to the Adamson Museum

d.) Guided nature walks and photography (Elsamere is rich with bio diversity of both plants and animals)

Lessons/lectures on particular aspects of conservation can also be arranged with the Centre; alternatively the centre may be able to visit schools and help develop their own studies on subjects such as geography, biology, chemistry, agriculture, social sciences and others.


Outreach visits to local and distance schools for education and establish Eco-school projects

The Centre teaching staff also arranges visits to schools and other institutions to introduce environmental concepts and projects through lectures, presentation and documentary shows;

 

Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha can also help students develop their own studies on subjects such as geography, biology, chemistry, agriculture, social sciences and others.

 

The progress of the schools on environmental conservation is regularly monitored by the Centre in collaboration with the District Education Officers and other concerned organizations within the selected regions. Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha may also help establish new eco-school projects within East Africa Schools.


Community educator and administrative training on environment and policy development

Besides its work in schools, Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha also contributes towards the community by inviting or visiting a different community groups interested in conservation. These groups are offered day visits with lectures, field work and demonstrations on the importance of conserving the environment and given guidance on how they can become involved.

Administrative training can be provided for environmental organizations and take the form of workshops or conferences. Organizations may request their own themes or approach the centre to conduct the workshop on their behalf.


Research

Elsamere Field Study Centre Naivasha offers a conducive environment and facilities for environmental research. Several researchers have successfully worked on different aspects of Lake Naivasha including:
a.) Water quality

b.) Fisheries and invasive species diversity

c.) Ecosystem health surveys of Lake Naivasha
d.) Environment and socioeconomic issues of Lake Naivasha
e.) Ornithology (350 species of birds, 80 of which are waterfowl)
f.) Agriculture and livelihood studies (the centre is surrounded by large scale horticultural farms)
g.) Wildlife and habitat (the centre and its environs provide a variety of ecosystems for study including grassland, woodland, shrub land and aquatic ecosystems
