Buganda Cultural Sites Day Tour From Kampala is Cultural day trip to Uganda's historic cultural sites. The tour begins after breakfast at your hotel where we transfer you to Naggalabi Coronation Site, a very important place in Buganda Kingdom. Just short of a 20 minutes drive from Kampala the panoramic hilltop at Naggalabi Buddo is the historic heart of Buganda.

It was here that the Kingdom was birthed, at the dawn of the 14th century, and it is here that every Kabaka is still crowned. At Naggalabi Buddo you can visit the main sacred sites, and literally walk in the footsteps of the past and present kings.

It is the place where the Buganda kings are crowned from. This has happened for over the last 700 years. There are unique things to see at the site including the Nalwoga pond, where water for event is got from, the grass thatched houses and the ’Muwafu tree’ which act as court where the king sits to settle dispute within among his people.

After Naggalabi, proceed to Katereeke Prison, a historical ditch that was constructed by the late Ssekabaka Kalema who was an Islamic sympathizer to imprison all his brothers and relatives who were potentials to ascend to the throne.

He controversially ruled Buganda in 1880 after exiling Kabaka Mwanga from his kingdom. Two months after Mwanga had been exiled Kalema ordered for an arrest of all princes and princess whom he suspected to be his rivals. Many of them were rounded up and exiled at Katereeke.

Prisoners like Bamweyana used to escape and one time he was got and slaughtered and Baganda’s who believe in him always come and do animal sacrifices to him.

After, proceed to Kabaka Mwanga’s Lake, a human made lake that was dug by the Baganda on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga. He wanted to create a channel that could connect his place to Lake Victoria but due to the break out of the religious wars which led to Moslem dissenters driving the Kabaka out of his land the aim was not attained. The lake attracts a number of birds that can be seen at its shores.

After the Kabaka’s lake, visit the Bulange (a Buganda parliament) a building with the most impressive colonial era setting. The site as well has several attractions including the exotic giant tortoises (more than 100 years) dawdling around the gardens of impressive blue building.

We will have lunch en-route and then continue to the Kasubi Tombs, a burial site where all the kings of Buganda who have departed this world are buried.

After, Kasubi, we will continue to the Wamala Tombs housed in an attractive, traditional thatched domed building which are the burial site of Ssekabaka Muteesa I, the 29th king of Buganda Kingdom who invited missionaries to Uganda.

It was during his era that the Arabs and notable explorers arrived in Uganda and opened it to the outside world. From the hills on which the Tombs are located, one can see Kagoma Hill a top where Ssuna built a place for his mother. He had so many wives that he did not mind giving away one of them.

This is part of Ssekabaka Ssuna’s history that intrigues many visitors to his Tomb in Wamala. We will sum up our day with a night visit to Ndere Center for an extravaganza of cultural dances and shopping souvenirs. You can join the group in its entertainment programme!

Return to hotel/ residence.
