Bombolulu Workshop – Itinerary

This tour takes you to the Bombolulu curio workshop. This is the Akamba wood carving centre. Here you can purchase a fine hand carved African memento that you would have to pay so dearly for back home. This is a project mainly for the handcrafts people. The industry helps these people with skills to make different handcrafts like jewels and carvings plus clothes. They also run a cultural centre- which you will be able to visit. Lunch will be served at a city restaurant. After the visit you will be back to the hotel.

 

Bombolulu Workshops and Cultural Centre was established to empower people with disability socially and economically, and to enable them realize their full potential in their lives.

Bombolulu Workshops

Bombolulu workshops are located along the north coast of Mombasa. Founded in 1969, Bombolulu Workshops is a Project of the Association for the Physically Disabled in Kenya (APDK). It is a major tourist attraction which consists of a Cultural Centre with 8 traditional homesteads. The Centre also runs a traditional Restaurant and entertains guests with traditional dances throughout the day. The Centre is run by the “Association for the physically disabled” and employs 150-disabled craftsmen/women who produce jewelery, hand printed textiles, wood carvings and leather crafts. The products are sold in a large showroom and exported to 20 countries. Bombolulu Workshops have grown to be one of the biggest rehabilitation centres in Kenya and has built a reputation as one of Kenyans most reliable exporters.


Here you find an extensive range of quality handicrafts skillfully produced by our physically challenged artisans. The jewellery, textiles, woodcarvings and leather crafts are exported to 18 countries and have received international acclaim for their exclusive African design and excellent finish.

 

The products are also marketed in tourist hotels and in the expansive showroom within the project. Bombolulu also supply to wholesale customers within Kenya and welcome visitors to take a tour of their workshops and authentic cultural centre which consists of six traditional homesteads of Kenyan tribes. Visitors learn about Fair Trade, handicraft designs and can enjoy traditional cultural dances, explore authentic tribal homesteads, and dine on typical Swahili food in their relaxing open-air "Ziga" restaurant.
