Mara Hot Air Balloon is launched at the Skyship site
not far from the Great Mara River; about ten minutes
drive from the Kichwa Tembo Camp. The balloon flight
is launched between 6:00 and 6:30am (sunrise).
The
balloon travels 15 to 25 kilometers depending on wind
conditions. The gentle and silent nature of the Masai
Mara Hot Air Balloon flight allows the passengers to
view the wildlife from a comfortable distance.
The
big five; the lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo
can be seen frequently along with other animals such
as hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, zebras, antelopes,
birds and many more.
The
scenery from a hot air balloon is unforgettable due
to its spectacular and breathtaking nature; the ultimate
safari experience. The balloon flight takes you over
the diverse habitats of the Masai Mara Reserve; the
great Mara River, swamps, forests, wildlife and the
African Savannah. The diversity of our flight trail
enables passengers to experience a unique opportunity
to be a part of the Masai Mara from the air.
Upon
landing, a champagne breakfast is served in the open
plains of the Masai Mara. Once breakfast is over the
passengers are taken back to their lodges and camps
en route a game drive.

Skyship
has 2 balloons: Lindstrand 180 (6 passengers) and Lindstrand
400 (16 passengers). Skyship Masai Mara balloons are
ordered directly from the Lindstrand factory and are
also fitted with seats.
Our
hot air balloons are made specially for operation in
the Masai Mara.
Masai
Mara Balloon flight by Skyship are launched from a campsite
near Kichwa Tembo Camp at sun rise. Large electric fans
cold-inflate the balloon; the electric fans are operating
silently so that the guests can hear animals in the
serene atmosphere of the Mara.
When
the balloon is inflated the pilot lights the gas burners
and heats the balloon. The heat launches the balloon
in to the air. As soon as the balloon is launched, the
passengers step inside the basket and the pilot takes
off.
The average flight duration
is 1 Hour; traveling approximately 15 to 25 Kilometers
depending the wind condition. On 95% of the days the
wind goes south deep into the Masai Mara Reserve where
the balloon lands. Up on landing a luxurious Champagne
breakfast is served followed by a game drive en route
your journey back to you hotel, camp, or lodge.

What should you bring with you?
Something warm to wear on top (fleece
or a sweater), A hat, camera and binoculars –
nothing too heavy.

What’s the duration of the flight?
The average flight duration is 1 hour
traveling approximately 15 to 25 km depending on wind
conditions.

What is the launch time and drive to the launch site?
Launch time is between 6:00 and 6:30am
(sun rise), it is a 10 minute drive from Kichwa Tembo
Tented Camp to our launch site.
4.
How high do we fly?
We can fly from a few centimeters above
the ground up to 12,500 ft above sea level, legally
above 12500 feet A.G.L oxygen needed.
5.
How do we get to the launch site and back to the hotel?
We provide transport to and from your
hotel/lodge/camp. Upon your request we may take you
on a game drive after the Champagne Breakfast.
6.
Where do we land?
It all depends on the wind on any given
day - 95% of days the wind takes us south, deep into
the Masai Mara Reserve where we land.
7.
How does the pilot control the balloon?
The pilot controls the vertical access
by heating or cooling the balloon (envelope). If the
pilot adds heat to the envelope the balloon goes up
and if he lets the envelope cool, the balloon will go
down. If the pilot wants to stay buoyant in equilibrium,
he will keep the envelope at the same temperature.
The
balloons fly by the wind. If there are winds of different
direction in different heights the pilot can go up or
down and steer the balloon according to the direction
of the wind.
