4 Days/ 3 Nights Parc National Des Volcans Mountain Gorilla Safari is a short three-night stay in northern Rwanda offers the opportunity to engage with the endangered mountain gorillas in the forests on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. This safari begins and ends in Kigali.

Parc National des Volcans in the Virunga volcanoes is home to the Mountain Gorillas to which Dian Fossey dedicated her life. Seeing some of the last remaining 700 mountain gorillas in the world is a fantastic experience and this safari takes you to Parc National des Volcans (PNV) in Rwanda. It offers an opportunity to track gorillas twice.

There are four groups of Mountain Gorillas located in the Rwandan sector of the Virunga Volcanoes. They are the Susa Group, Sabinyo Group, Group Thirteen, and Amahoro Group. Trekking times to reach each group vary from two to seven hours depending upon their movements.

Most days there are several groups within two-hour treks of the car park. During the wet season trekking times are reduced to as little as 20 minutes as the gorillas move to lower elevations to feed.

Parc National Des Volcans in Rwanda has seven habituated gorilla families and tracking most groups in the afro-montane forest usually takes only a few hours. You can also climb a volcano, visit the remains of Dian Fossey's grave or visit the endangered golden monkey.

Day 1: Kigali – Drive to Parc National des Volcans

Arrival in Kigali. On arrival you will be met by a driver and private vehicle and driven to Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge. The roads are good and the journey to Ruhengeri will take approximately two hours.

On arrival a late lunch will be served in the main lodge, with its scenic vistas of the Virunga Volcanoes, of the Parc National des Volcans. Afternoon at leisure to settle in and acclimatize and perhaps an afternoon guided bird walk in the surrounds of the lodge.

Day 2: Explore Parc National des Volcans Gorilla Tracking

An early breakfast, served at the lodge, before departing by road to the Parc National des Volcans headquarters. Here you will be allocated a guide for one of the habituated Mountain Gorilla families and given a safety briefing.

You will then be taken by vehicle to a starting point, to commence your gorilla trek in the forest. The amount of time spent walking is dependent upon which family of Gorillas you are allocated to and where they are to be found on that day.

Once the family is sighted you will spend a maximum of one hour with the Gorilla family. After this phenomenal wildlife experience, return to your vehicle on the edge of the forest, returning to Virunga Safari Lodge for lunch. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 3: Parc National des Volcans

Early morning breakfast prior to departing for your second gorilla trek, with the possibility of visiting a different Gorilla family. Return to Virunga Safari Lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, relax or take a drive to the bustling market town of Ruhengeri, nearby, or visit the beautiful lakes of Kivu, Burera, Ruhondo and Karago.

There are also the genocide memorials and community and conservation projects, to be visited. Return toVirunga Safari Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Parc National des Volcans (Ruhengeri) – Drive to Kigali

This morning you will bid farewell to Virunga Safari Lodge staff and depart for Kigali. If time permits, you can go for a tour of the city including a visit to the market, pottery project, handicraft shops, the Franco-Rwandan cultural centre and the genocide memorial.

You will be transferred to the airport in time to check in for your onward journey.
