Day Best of Kenya Flying Safari
Overview
12
Day Best of Kenya Flying Safari
is
a delightful journey for travelers with limited time
away from home yet who desire an in-depth safari experience.
Devoted exclusively to Kenya, in less than two weeks
we touch upon nearly all of the region’s highlights,
while enjoying exceptional wildlife throughout. Four
flights expedite travel between locations and make the
most of our time in each reserve. We start in Nairobi
at the Nairobi Serena Hotel with a Safari Briefing by
our field team and meeting with a Maasai Elder. A city
tour shows Nairobi to be a historic and fascinating
city, visiting the home of author Karen Blixen who penned
Out of Africa. Luncheon at the homestead of Kenya’s
oldest tea plantation hosted by the original settler’s
granddaughter is another highlight. Giraffe Centre is
next, including a private briefing by the resident warden
about the mission to save the endangered Rothschild
giraffe; the chance to hand feed them is a bonus!
Our
adventures in the bush begin with Amboseli National
Park. Romantically situated in the foothills
of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli is famous for its tremendous
variety of big game. Having arrived at Amboseli fresh
and relaxed after a flight over the scenic Athi Plains,
we are ready for a morning game run. Our delightful
lodge is perfectly located in the very centre of the
reserve. We awaken to the sights and sounds of big game
country and, if we’re lucky, to a view of Kilimanjaro
often unclouded in the early morning sky. In addition
to elephant, antelope, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and
the rare black rhino, Amboseli is sought after by travelers
in the know for its breathtaking scenery and easily
approachable wildlife.
Just
after daybreak, we venture into the crisp morning air
in search of the great herds. Our game drives are sure
to
reveal great wonders. Awaiting us at our next stop is
a sheltered oasis, clustered around a waterhole and
set in the pristine calm of its own private reserve:
Sweetwaters Tented Camp. Abounding with wildlife, unfettered
by the more rigorous strictures of national parks, Sweetwaters
offers a charming blend of under-canvas ambience and
casual luxury where we’ll enjoy two nights. One
of only four private game reserves in Kenya, it excels
in the provision of privileged seclusion and private
game viewing. The reserve is also home to a 24,000 acre
rhino sanctuary and an extensive chimpanzee project
under the direction of Jane Goodall, whose goal is to
rehabilitate and home orphaned and abused chimps—
a visit is a highlight.
The
Mount Kenya Safari Club, our next sojourn, might well
be one of the most gracious establishments in Kenya,
with a colorful past besides! The grand main building
gleams white against the green sweep of surrounding
lawns, while the idyllic swimming pool reflects the
forested evergreen foothills rising up to the clouds
and peaks of Mount Kenya in the distance.
The
best is yet to come still, on safari in the Maasai Mara.
An un spoilt wilderness of haunting beauty, it promises
a
profusion of wildlife, prolific bird life and the unprecedented
opportunity of catching up with all the members of the
“Big Five” in one morning. Part of the vast
Serengeti plains, this is the legendary Africa of our
dreams where spectacular events take place. A Bush Walk
will bring us closer to the creatures of the wild, but
our favorite event might be the spectacular sundowner
cocktail party around a bonfire, with a view to the
vast surrounding savannah. While in the Mara, we also
visit a traditional village and meet the proud Maasai
people. The breadth and scope of
the

encompass everything for which Kenya is famous—the
magnificent scenery, the breathtaking wildlife, the
excitement and adventure—all in a timeframe that
suits your needs.

Day 5
Amboseli

Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

6 – Day 7
Ol Pejeta Conservancy
This morning
we fly to Nairobi, and then drive through lush tea and
coffee estates to Sweetwaters Tented Camp. Both Sweetwaters
land and the Ol Pejeta Conservancy was once the private
domain of famed multi-millionaire Adnan Kashoggi. We
visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a charming haven established
by the Jane Goodall Institute to provide refuge to orphaned
chimps as well as forty black rhinos. Sweetwaters boasts
the highest game-to-area ratio of any park or reserve
in Kenya, and with its own waterhole and saltlick we’ll
be guaranteed close encounters. Whether it’s the
game drives, camel trekking, lion tracking, al fresco
dining or relaxing by pool, Sweetwaters is bound to
delight.

Mount Kenya Safari Club
Our
destination today is the cool, crisp Kenyan highlands
and the historic Mount Kenya Safari Club, set in over
100 acres of landscaped gardens. This exclusive resort
offers refined elegance as well as a sense of its Hollywood
past. All of the finest amenities are here, including
horseback riding, golf, a bowling green, swimming, a
beauty salon, an animal orphanage, tennis, trout streams
and more. Fine dining and upgraded accommodations of
rooms with a view are hallmarks of our stay.

Day 9
Maasai Mara
This
morning we wing west over the Great Rift Valley to the
unspoiled savannah of the Maasai Mara. Here we may savour
a Bush Walk with an expert naturalist, experiencing
the Mara from the ground up, or we may try a Hot-Air
Balloon Safari. Our accommodations are equally superlative
at the Mara Safari Club or Kichwa Tempo Camp with two
nights under canvas, recalling the golden age of safaris.

Day
10
Maasai Mara
The
search for great predators continues today during extensive
game runs. On the plains are enormous herds of grazing
animals plus the elusive cheetah and leopard hiding
amidst acacia boughs. We also visit a Maasai village
and glimpse life so ancient that it astonishes. The
true pinnacle of our journey to the Mara however will
be Bush Sundowners—a civilized cocktail party
staged in the untamed wilds of Africa.
