Day 2: Fly to Kigali Airport Rwanda's Capital. Overnight

When you arrive, you'll be met by your private guide and 4WD who'll be with you for the rest of your time in Rwanda.

You may want to relax around the hotel pool, however there is also plenty to explore in Kigali, from a general city tour, a trip to the local markets, or a thought-provoking visit to the Kigali Memorial Centre which recounts the tragic story of the country's genocide.

Tonight you will overnight at Hotel des Mille Collines. This iconic hotel was featured in the film Hotel Rwanda. If the evening is clear you can enjoy some spectacular views from their roof-top restaurant.

Day 3: Kigali – Drive to Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

The next morning your driver will meet you at the hotel and you'll start on your two-hour journey to the Volcanoes National Park. If you didn't have a chance to visit the Memorial Centre yesterday, you may wish to do it en-route. Wind your way through the beautiful countryside and you'll understand why they call this “the land of one thousand hills"!

You'll spend the next 3 nights at Gorilla Mountain View Lodge. This simple lodge is friendly and comfortable, and provides a good base from which to explore the national park.

Day 4: Explore Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

After an early breakfast you'll make your way with your guide to the park headquarters where you'll be briefed on the golden monkeys you'll be tracking.

Tracking these primates is generally easier than the gorillas, but the altitude can make it more strenuous than usual. In the afternoon you are free to do as you please - your driver will be at your disposal, so he can advise the possible options in the area. For example, you may want to drive out to some local markets and try your hand at bargaining!

Day 5: Explore Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

It will be another early start as you head to the park's headquarters for a briefing on the mountain gorillas and how to behave around them.

In a group of 8 people you'll be lead by an experienced park ranger to a designated family of gorillas. The hour you spend with them will go incredibly quickly - and is an experience you will never forget. Again you'll have the afternoon at leisure - perhaps take a drive out to some nearby lakes, or maybe just relax at the hotel and enjoy the beautiful scenery and birdlife!

Day 6, 7 & 8: Volcanoes – Drive to Lake Kivu, Rwanda

This morning is a later start, before making your way down to Lake Kivu. The winding road on the three-hour drive to Gisenyi will give you an insight into the local Rwandan life.

Perhaps stop for lunch along the way so you can taste the local delicacy - goat kebabs! You'll arrive in the afternoon to spend three nights at Paradise Malahide.

This small lodge is rustic and simple, but friendly and relaxing. In the evenings, sit and watch the local fishermen sing their haunting tune as they head out to the lake shores for the night's fishing, and returning again early the next morning. Be sure to try some of their freshly caught tilapia - a specialty on the lodge's menu.

After breakfast start your journey down the lake shore to Nyungwe Forest. This drive is absolutely stunning - winding roads hug the lake shore and hills making for some fantastic photo opportunities.

You'll be met with huge smiles and waves from the local children as you pass by. In the afternoon you'll approach the forest. It has a distinctly rainforest feel to it - and is home to 13 different primate species and about 75 species of mammal.

Spend the next two nights at Nyungwe Top View Hotel. The selling point of this simple lodge is the absolutely fantastic views which it enjoys over the forest - on clear days you can even see as far as Lake Kivu.

In the afternoon take part in the canopy walk - a chance to see the forest from a whole other perspective! The whole walk is about 200m long, with 90m being completely suspended over the canopy - giving you a real bird-eye view of the tree tops.
